Short for Bismuth-Germanium-Oxyde ( Hepb img47.gif ), a scintillator of high atomic number Z used in electromagnetic crystal calorimeters. BGO is characterized by fast rise time (a few nanoseconds) and short radiation length (1.11 cm). see Lecoq92.
