Debra Medina (born June 1, 1962 in Bee County, Texas) was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of Texas in the 2010 election against incumbent Rick Perry and senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. She received 19 percent of the vote. Perry won his final term in the general election.
Medina graduated from San Antonio Baptist Memorial Hospital System School of Nursing in 1984. Later in life she earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from the evangelical Christian Le Tourneau University.[1] She is a registered nurse and businesswoman, owning Prudentia Inc., which specializes in improving medical billing procedures. She is or has been the chairman of the Wharton County Republican Party.
Medina advocates eliminating the property tax and replacing it with a broader based sales tax, gun ownership, border security, and state sovereignty. She caused controversy when she did not rule out that the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks during an interview on the Glenn Beck program; "some very good questions have been raised in that regard ... the American people have not seen all of the evidence there, so I have not taken a position on that."
