Agency is a Philosophical term used to describe the ability of an agent (for example a person) to make choices and have those choices exert an influence of the world.

The Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy states that with regard to free will

philosophers working on this issue have been hunting for, maybe not exclusively, but centrally, is a feature of agency that is necessary for persons to be morally responsible for their conduct.[1]
