The Bombing of Belgrade (codenamed Operation Punishment) began on April 6, 1941 and continued for several days. The bombing of Belgrade, which was then the capital of Yugoslavia, was carried out by the German Luftwaffe on the orders of Adolf Hitler. Thousands of people, mainly civilians, were killed in the bombing.

After the war, Luftwaffe General Alexander Lohr, who had commanded Operation Punishment was convicted of war crimes. He was executed in Belgrade in 1947.[1] Belgrade is now the capital of Serbia.
