The Democratic Party of Japan is the second largest political party of Japan. The DPJ led the government from 2009 to 2012 under prime ministers Yukio Hatoyama, Naoto Kan, and Yoshihiko Noda. It was defeated in the general election of 2012, which brought the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party back to power.
