Koblenz is a city of western Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (German: Rheinland-Pfalz), located at the confluence of the River Rhine and the River Mosel. It was founded in 9 BC as a Roman fort, the name of which - Castrum apud Confluestes ('the fort at the confluence') - developed into the modern form. The point of confluence is known as Deutsches Eck, 'the corner of Germany', and is marked by a bombastic stone memorial. Koblenz is the home of the German Federal Archives.
