Marvel Comics

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 2 min

Marvel Comics is an American comic book publisher. It was originally founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman. It is home to some of the most well known super heroes such as Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and the X-Men. Marvel Studios, LLC (formerly Marvel Films in the mid-1990s) produces movies based on Marvel Comics superheroes.

Background[edit]

In 1996, Marvel Comics nearly declared bankruptcy due to in-fighting between Ronald O. Perelman, Carl Icahn, and Ike Perlmutter, as well as the price-raising policies of Perelman, including selling 40% of Marvel's stock for far more than the $87.2 million he paid for acquiring Marvel in the first place, which also resulted in several comic retailers being forced to fold, including at least 4,000 chains of Mile High Comics.[1][2] In 2006-2007, it featured the controversial Civil War comics event, in which character who did not reveal their secret identities to the government, an act which would have put their families in danger, were branded terrorists and hunted down by agents of H.A.M.M.E.R. a satire of the NSA. Superhumans who did not register were dragged from their homes and taken to a facility in an alternate dimension outside the universe, where they were treated similarly to real-life prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, tortured and isolated from their families and friends simply for protesting the government snooping in their private lives.

It was eventually purchased by the liberal Walt Disney Company on 2009, with the purchase being finalized in 2012.
