Derek Lalonde (born August 18, 1972) is an American professional ice hockey coach. Currently, he is an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (National Hockey League)[1].

Lalonde previously served as the head coach for the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (American Hockey League|AHL), the head coach for the Toledo Walleye of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), the head coach and general manager for the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (United States Hockey League), assistant coach at both Denver University and Ferris State University (NCAA).

Playing Career[edit]

Lalonde played college ice hockey as a goaltender at State University of New York College at Cortland from 1991-1995. During his senior year, he was named the Red Letter Award winner as team MVP. His former teammates include Nate Leaman (head coach at Providence College), Chadd Cassidy (former head coach of the Rochester Americans of the AHL and current head coach at Northwood Prep). Prior to Cortland State, he played at St. Lawrence Central High School. In 2008, he was inducted in to the St. Lawrence Central Sports Hall of Fame.

Coaching Career[edit]

Currently, Lalonde is an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL)[2]. He was named Assistant Coach on July 12, 2018. In two years with the Lightning, Lalonde has helped lead the organization to a 105-37-10 record. This includes the 2018-19 season where the Lightning amassed a record of 62-16-4 and earned the President's Trophy[3].

Prior to Tampa, he was the head coach of the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL), top affiliate of the Minnesota Wild[4]. In two seasons, he compiled a 69-58-25 record. In Lalonde's first season leading the Iowa Wild, the team compiled a record of 36-31-9, which was a 22 point improvement from the previous season[5]. This set a franchise record and serves as the first winning season in Iowa Wild history[6].

Before joining the Wild organization, Lalonde spent two seasons as the head coach of the Toledo Walleye of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. He amassed a record of 97-35-12 record. During his first season in 2014-15, Lalonde led the Walleye to a 50-15-7 record, claiming the Brabham Cup. Lalonde garnered the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year[7] after orchestrating a 58 point improvement from the previous season[8], which was the largest jump in points in ECHL history[9].

Prior to joining the Walleye, Lalonde spent three years as the head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), compiling a record of 114-56-14[10]. In 2011-12, he led the Gamblers to a 47-9-4 record in the organization's fourth Clark Cup and third Anderson Cup championship, leading to him being named the USHL Coach of the Year[11].

Lalonde began his NCAA D1 coaching career at Ferris State University in 2003 through 2006. In 2004, he helped lead the Bulldogs to university's first ever CCHA championship and NCAA appearance[12].

Lalonde earned a B.S.E. in Physical Education from State University of New York at Cortland in 1995. He received a M.A. in Education Administration from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1998.
