Adam Clayton Powell was a 2016 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 13th Congressional District of New York.[1] Powell was defeated in the Democratic primary.[2]
Powell is also a former Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 68 from 2001 to 2010. Powell's political experience includes being a councilman for the New York City Council.
Powell filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission in order to run for the U.S. House representing New York's 13th District in the 2014 elections.[3] However, Powell failed to file for the election with the New York Board of Elections.
Powell earned his B.A. from Howard University and his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law. His professional experience includes working as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx, New York, and as a co-producer of "Keep the Faith, Baby."[4]
Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Charles Rangel (D) did not seek re-election, leaving the seat open. Adriano Espaillat defeated eight other Democrats in the primary to replace Rangel. The race between Espaillat and Keith Wright was initially uncalled with Espaillat leading by nearly 3%. Wright conceded from the race two days after the election. Espaillat then defeated Tony Evans (R), Daniel Vila Rivera (G), and Scott Lloyd Fenstermaker (Transparent Government) in the general election. The primary elections took place on June 28, 2016.[5][2]
