The Alabama Display of Ten Commandments Amendment was a proposed constitutional amendment that was not placed by the Alabama Legislature on a 2016 election ballot.
The measure would not have allowed properties belonging to the state to be used to display the Ten Commandments and prohibit the expenditure of public funds in defense of the constitutionality of the measure.[1]
The full text of the measure can be found here.[1]
The measure was sponsored by Sen. Gerald Dial (R-13).[1]
According to Article 18 of the Alabama Constitution, both houses of the Alabama State Legislature are required to pass the bill by a three-fifths or 60 percent vote, in order to send it to the statewide election ballot. In 2016, the Legislature was in session from February 2 through the middle of May. The legislature did not act on the bill.
