Alan Stephen Gold was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1997 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. After 13 years on the bench, Gold assumed senior status on January 10, 2011.[1] He fully retired from the court on October 17, 2014.[2]

Education

A native of New York State, Gold graduated from the University of Florida with his bachelor's degree in 1966 and from the Duke University School of Law with his J.D. in 1969. Gold later graduated from University of Miami Law School with a Master in Laws degree in 1974.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Southern District of Florida

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Bob Graham, Gold was nominated by President Bill Clinton on February 12, 1997, to a seat vacated by Jose Gonzalez as Gonzalez went on senior status. Gold was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 27, 1997, on a voice vote and received commission on July 1, 1997. Gold assumed senior status on January 10, 2011. Gold was succeeded in this position by Robin Rosenbaum. He retired from the court on October 17, 2014.[1]

On July 13, 2009, Judge Gold conducted a hearing on whether to enforce a civil summons from the IRS seeking customer information on UBS customers.[3]

The Justice Department said it would insist on information on a large number of UBS customers in any settlement between the American and Swiss governments over a high-stakes, bank-secrecy dispute in which UBS allowed customers to set-up off-shore accounts to dodge taxes.[3]

On July 31, 2009, Judge Gold announced a settlement between the United States and Switzerland governments and UBS. The settlement included UBS must disclose 52,000 names of individuals that have bank accounts offshore. This allowed the U.S. Government to start tax evasion investigations on those who try to avoid paying U.S. taxes.[4]
