Ann D. Montgomery is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. She joined the court in 1996 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. She assumed senior status on May 31, 2016.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Born in Litchfield, Minnesota, Montgomery earned her B.S. from the University of Kansas in 1971, and her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974.[1]

Montgomery was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota by President Bill Clinton on November 27, 1995, to a seat vacated by Diana Murphy upon Murphy's elevation to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. The American Bar Association rated Montgomery Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Montgomery's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on February 28, 1996, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on March 3, 1996. Montgomery was confirmed by a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on August 2, 1996, and she received her commission on August 6, 1996. Montgomery assumed senior status on May 31, 2016.[1][3]
Prior to her elevation to the district court, Montgomery was a federal magistrate judge for the District of Minnesota from 1994 to 1996.[1]

In 2009, Tom Petters was convicted for his role in a $3.5 billion Ponzi Scheme. On April 23, 2010, Judge Montgomery approved the sale of Petters' former seven-bedroom home on Lake Minnetonka for $5 million. The proceeds of the sale were intended to pay off the mortgages associated with the property and pay damages to people that lost money in the Ponzi Scheme.[4][5]
