Artists Against Fracking is a coalition of artists founded by Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon that aims to oppose hydraulic fracturing in New York state.[1]

Mission[edit]

Artists Against Fracking's mission "is for the world to embrace sustainable living and develop renewable energies through economically-viable alternatives to fossil fuel."[2]

History and work[edit]

Yoko Ono and her son, Sean Ono Lennon, founded Artists Against Fracking in August 2012 as a response to Governor Andrew Cuomo's consideration of allowing hydraulic fracturing in New York state. Originally made up of 150 artists, musicians and filmmakers, the organization now has more than 200 members.[1]

In March 2013, The Independent Oil and Gas Association filed a formal complaint with New York's Joint Commission on Public Ethics requesting that the board look into whether or not Artists Against Fracking was required to register as a lobbying group and disclose their spending on anti-fracking advocacy. Artists Against Fracking contended that their vocal opposition was protected as free speech, but that they would register with the board if required. The "donate" link was later removed from their website, but no formal ruling has been issued.[3][4][5]

In December 2014, Governor Cuomo issued a ban on fracking in New York.[6] As of September 2015, Artists Against Fracking continues to maintain a website and social media presence, but the coalition has not updated either medium since the December 2014 fracking ban.

Leadership[edit]

The founders of Artists Against Fracking are Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon. David Fenton, founder of Fenton Communications, is a spokesman for the organization.[5][7]

Members and supporters include Mark Ruffalo, Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin.[8]

Finances[edit]

Artists Against Fracking has received financial support from the Sustainable Markets Foundation, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor. Since Artists Against Fracking is not a registered 501(c) organization, it is not subject to public disclosure of financial records.[5]
