Hundreds of elections took place in 2021 across the United States, including primary and general elections at the state and local levels and special elections at the federal, state, and local levels. Candidates were also preparing for the 2022 elections, including elections for all 435 seats in the U.S. House, 34 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate, and 36 of 50 state governorships.
The 2021 elections had the potential to impact control of seven state executive offices, and municipal elections in 71 of America's 100 largest cities by population. Ballotpedia identified and followed a series of narratives—big picture stories—up-and-down the ballot and across the country throughout the year. Federal politics[edit]
Although there were no regularly-scheduled federal elections in 2021, there were federal special elections which took place.
State politics[edit]
In 2021, six states held elections for executive, legislative, or judicial seats, including elections for three of the nation's 99 state legislative chambers, 15 appellate court seats, and two gubernatorial offices.
Local elections[edit]
In 2021, Ballotpedia covered elections for mayor, city council, and all other city officials in the 100 largest cities by population in the United States, as well as elections for county officials whose jurisdictions overlapped with those cities.
