Belvin Bruins is a former Democratic candidate for the Grant Parish Justice of the Peace Court in Louisiana. Bruins was defeated in the primary election on March 25, 2017.
Bruins was also a 2011 candidate for the District 3 seat on the Grant Parish Police Jury. He was defeated by Tom Hamilton 64 percent to 36 percent.[1][2]
At the time of his 2017 run for office, Bruins was a warehouse technician for Procter & Gamble.[3]
Louisiana had partisan elections for local judicial offices in 2017. A primary election was held on October 14, 2017, and a general election was held on November 18, 2017. Primary and general elections were also held on March 25, 2017, and April 29, 2017, respectively.
The candidate filing deadline for the spring elections was January 13, 2017, and the deadline for the fall elections was July 14, 2017. In Louisiana, judicial candidates who are unopposed as of the end of the candidate filing period are automatically declared elected, and their names do not appear on the ballot.[4][5] A. Brett Harlan (R) defeated Belvin Bruins (D) in the primary election for District B justice of the peace on the Grant Parish Justice of the Peace Court.[6]

Judges of the Louisiana Justice of the Peace Courts are each elected to six-year terms. The elections for this court are partisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a local resident for two years, younger than 70 years old, and have a law degree.[7]
