The term charter school management organization refers to an organization that operates multiple charter schools under a common vision. Charter schools contract with these organizations to provide education services in a number of different areas, from transportation, to the curriculum, to the hiring of staff. There are two types of charter school management organizations: nonprofit and for-profit. Nonprofit institutions are typically referred to as "charter management organizations" (CMOs), while their for-profit counterparts are called "education management organizations" (EMOs). The National Education Policy Center has identified 97 EMOs and 201 CMOs that were operating as of the 2011-2012 school year, although the center's definition deviates slightly from that given here to include organizations that operate only one school.[1][2][3]
