An effort in Monterey Park, California, to recall Councilmen Peter Chan and Hans Liang was initiated in June 2019. Petitioners had until November 2019 to gather enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot.^[1]

Recall supporters[edit]

The recall effort began in response to the city council's 3-2 vote to make the council elected by district rather than at-large. As a result, both councilmembers that voted against the change would be removed from the council in 2020.^[1]

Recall opponents[edit]

Chan responded to the recall effort. He said, "I have not done anything wrong in the city, so what they’re basing everything on, I don’t know. I’m happy to stand firm with my character." Liang said about the recall, "Sometimes, I feel people are not invested in finding out the root of issues and are easily influenced by negative comments and untrue statements."^[1]

Recall organizers had 120 days to submit valid signatures equal to 20% of registered voters in the jurisdiction. In this case, petitioners needed 5,609 signatures by November 2019 to put the recall on the ballot.
