This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]
| “ | Municipal courts, or city courts, deal with violations of city ordinances committed within city limits. Cases usually involve traffic and other minor offenses. A person charged with an offense in municipal court may be represented by a lawyer. The judge hears cases without a jury. Anyone convicted in municipal court may appeal to the district court of the county where the municipal court is located.[2] | ” |
Selection method[edit]

Judges of the Kansas Municipal Courts are directly appointed by a local district nominating commission. They serve four-year terms and must be reappointed if they wish to serve again.[3][4]
Qualifications
To serve on a municipal court, a judge must be:[3]
- a high school graduate;
- a county resident; and
- a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or certified by the state supreme court after passing an examination.
