McAlister ran for the seat of retiring Judge Dennis J. Buckley. He was defeated in the primary election on June 5, receiving 33.23 percent of the vote.[1][2]

Originally, McAlister filed to run for a seat on the Superior Court of Sutter County, but switched races in February 2012.[3]
