2014[edit]

Short's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[13]

Education

  • Excerpt: "I am devoted to helping improve our public schools. We must allow our teachers to teach our children and give them the tools to be effective. Accountability should be in place that also requires the involvement of parents to insure success. The bigger issue today is equity in the funding schools receive. The schools on the western side of the County are in need of equalization funding reform and I plan to be part of that discussion."

Economy

  • Excerpt: "The western side of Sussex County needs full time jobs with full time benefits. It is as simple as that. The departure of DuPont has had a dramatic change in our employment opportunities on the western side of the county. It is my vision that we should work hard to attract suitable businesses to our area and retain those we have. We have been successful in doing just that but we need to continue to focus our effort. The formation of our recent City, County and State monthly economic development meetings will only help."

Environment

  • Excerpt: "This topic encompasses not only protecting our ponds and the Nanticoke River which are important natural resources but also our quality of life issues that many take for granted. Our volunteer Fire and EMS service needs our help to continue. They have saved us millions over the years and today our growth has placed a burden on them that is almost too much to handle. They deserve our best since they have given us theirs."

Regulation

  • Excerpt: "We need to continue to support our local businesses by reviewing, revising and eliminating where we can state business regulations. Those rules that hinder expansion of business or threaten their existence need to be changed. Delaware needs to be known as the friendly business State and overcome our size disadvantage by making our ability to react and attract our biggest asset."

2012[edit]

Short's website highlighted the following campaign issues:[14]

  • EDUCATION: "We must allow our teachers to teach our children. Our testing system should be an instrument for learning and not just a generator of statistics. Accountability should be in place that also requires the involvement of parents to insure the success of education."
  • ECONOMY: "we should attract suitable businesses to our area to occupy the business parks that exist and change the trend that now is focused purely on Route 13 as part time positions without the security of any benefits. We need a change in our business environment in order to attract and keep business in Delaware."
  • ENVIRONMENT: "This topic encompasses not only the protection of our ponds and the Nanticoke River which are very important natural resources but also the quality of life issues that many take for granted."
  • GROWTH: "We should have growth but it needs to be controlled and sustained. It needs to be planned and not at the expense of current taxpayers. Our roads need to be greatly improved." "I plan to help replenish the Transportation Trust Fund."
  • DISASTER RELIEF FUND: "a common sense approach to deal with the financial impart of disaster relief. We need to act now to assure that we can financially deal with further emergencies."

Scorecards[edit]

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Delaware

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Delaware scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
