Rosenthal is a geophysicist at Unocal. He also received his alternative teacher certification and is a volunteer educator at the Houston Zoo. Rosenthal obtained a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Delaware. He went on to earn a master's degree in geological sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.[1]

Two of the seven seats on the Fort Bend Independent School District school board were up for general election on May 7, 2016. Position 3 incumbent Jim Rice was the sole candidate to file in the race. Position 7 incumbent David Rosenthal faced challengers James Davidson Jr., Sonja Leonard, Laura Ramirez, and Shirley Rose-Gilliam. There was no primary.[2] Rice won his unopposed re-election bid and Rosenthal defeated Davidson, Leonard, Ramirez, and Rose-Gilliam to secure another term on the board.[3]
