Ballotpedia: Index of Terms

Evidence can be defined as something legally submitted in a court or other decision-making body to ascertain the truth of a matter. Evidence may take several forms, including oral testimony, videotape, documents, etc. The rules of evidence provide the court with a criteria it must follow in order to ascertain what evidence is admissible at trial. In doing so, many rules of evidence concentrate first on the relevancy of the offered evidence. In the U.S., federal courts follow the Federal Rules of Evidence, while state courts generally follow their own rules.[1][2]
