Former Montana Governor will not run for U.S. Senate in 2014

HELENA, Montana: Former Governor Brian Schweitzer (D) announced on Saturday that he would not be running for the open U.S. Senate seat in 2014, saying the legislature is not the place for him. Schweitzer, a popular two-term governor, was expected to run and be favored to take the seat of longtime Senator Max Baucus (D). Schweitzer said he prefers getting things done by plowing the field than be in the U.S. Senate, where things die. According to Politico, "Schweitzer had been hit with a series of damaging stories about his ties to 'secret money' and a nonprofit group run by former aides. But sources said the laundry list of opposition research went much deeper — and could have crippled a Schweitzer campaign for Senate. Moreover, there was fear that Schweitzer’s penchant for off-the-cuff remarks would hurt his ability to respond effectively to the barrage of GOP attacks."[1] Republicans see Schweitzer's decision as a strong opportunity to flip the district in 2014. Democrats remain confident in their ability to hold the seat, saying there are other qualified Montana Democrats who can take the seat.[2][3]
