The current Georgia State Superintendent of Schools is Richard Woods (R). Woods assumed office in 2015.
The State Board of Education is composed of 15 members, including the Superintendent of Schools. The other members of the board are representatives for the 14 congressional districts. They are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for seven-year terms. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[3]
