Candidate Connection

Gerald Garza completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Garza's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

(1) Improve communication with the public and within the office itself. (2) Re-install a chain of command that will allow for better service. (3) Improve training that will promote cross-training.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The district clerk is a ministerial position. This means that policies are dictated by the state legislature. With that said, I believe that any elected position, including the district clerk, can be a public presents that should promote a better example for our kids. Kids, who are our future leaders.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father, Robert Garza, because he taught me the value of honesty, hard work and family; and my grandfather, Ben Garza, because his example of community service showed me that everyone has a responsibility to build for our future.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

When my father died, I wrote a book, "Prepared to Death", to help me overcome his passing. While it was based on the humor both my dad and I have, it could give the reader an idea of who I am and in turn what I stand for.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity and a sense of responsibility.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I have an accounting degree from the University of Texas in Austin. I have work experience with a CPA firm and an investment company. And, I have ten years experience as the district clerk's chief administrator.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

An elected official should not feel entitled, rather, an elected official should feel responsible to the public and act accordingly.

What legacy would you like to leave?

My grandfather left a legacy of public service that resulted in the formation of LULAC. While I don't think I can top that, I want to open the door so my kids will want to add to our family commitment to our community.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first moon landing, I was ten.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Whataburger, it was my first summer job, I had it for three months.

What happened on your most awkward date?

I locked my keys in the car and we had to wait for my sister to bring another set. Must not have been too bad though, I ended up marrying her (we have now been married almost 37 years).

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas, because I am a grandfather of three and I love to see the excitement on their faces.

What is your favorite book? Why?

I guess I should say my book, "Prepared to Death". It did almost make the best seller list. I think you needed to sell 100,000 copies and I just missed it. All I need to sell was another 999,987 copies. Actually, my favorite book is a series of books called "Bathroom Readers", they are filled with good short stories and fun facts.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Sherlock Holmes because of his ability to see the details and what they mean.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

Can a "thing" be living? If so, then my wife because I do love her. If not, then my laptop because it keeps me in touch with the world.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

"Happier" by MarshMello. Watch the video and you'll see why.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Getting over the death of my father.

Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?

The district clerk is responsible for all funds awarded to minors. The clerk needs to secure these funds until the minors come of age.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

Knowledge and experience handling a large group of people.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?

The district clerk is the custodian of all court records. As such, its importance can be judged on any case that goes before any court.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe previous experience is important. I have ten years. I also have an accounting background that will further enhance my ability to do a great job.
