History[edit]

Front page of Helena Independent Record

The Helena Independent Record is the progeny of a series of newspaper acquisitions and mergers which dates to Helena’s first newspaper, The Montana Radiator. The Radiator was first published on December 17, 1865. The Radiator was published intermittently, but went out of business in less than a year. The paper's assets were purchased by the Fisk brothers of Minnesota. The brothers first published a new paper, The Helena Herald, on November 15, 1866.[5]

A competing paper, the Rocky Mountain Gazette, was published in Helena, Mont., from 1866 to 1874. The Gazette was destroyed by a fire on January 9, 1874. The Deer Lake, Mont.-based Independent moved to Helena in March 1874. By 1890, there were four daily newspapers and 15 weekly publications in Helena. On August 20, 1900, the Montana Daily Record was first published. In 1902, the Record acquired the Herald and was published as the Daily Record until the name was changed to the Montana Record-Herald in 1916.

The Independent newspaper was sold to Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in the early 1920s. The Record-Herald was sold Anaconda in 1926. On November 22, 1943, the two papers merged and were published as the Helena Independent-Record. The Anaconda Mining Company sold the Independent-Record to Lee Enterprises, Inc., in 1959. Lee Enterprises owns newspapers in over 50 markets nationwide and publishes Montana newspapers including the Billings Gazette, The Montana Standard and the Helena Independent Record.[5] Lee Enterprises publishes both the Missoulian and the Ravalli Republic in Montana under the umbrella of the Missoula Group.[3]
