The mission statement of the Idaho State Department of Education reads:[1]

The State Board of Education is composed of eight members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The other seven members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate. The purpose of the board is to provide general oversight and governance for public K-20 education. The Board also serves as the Board of Trustees for state-sponsored public four year colleges and universities, and as the Board of Regents for the University of Idaho.[3]
