The Director of the Iowa Department of Education is a state executive position in the Iowa state government.
The department was created by the 35th General Assembly in 1913 and was originally called the Department of Public Instruction. The current name was adopted in 1986.[1]
The current officeholder is Ann Lebo. Lebo had served as the executive director of the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners since 2016 when she was appointed. Lebo replaced former director Ryan Wise, who resigned in order to take a job as dean of the School of Education at Drake University.[2][3]
