James Harvey was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1973 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. Harvey later served the same court on senior status.[1]

Harvey passed away on July 20, 2019.[2]

Education[edit]

Harvey graduated from the University of Michigan Law School with his J.D. degree in 1948.[1]

Professional career[edit]

Harvey began his legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Michigan. He also was the assistant city attorney for the City of Saginaw, from 1949 to 1953, and a city councilman for the City of Saginaw, from 1955 to 1957, before being elected a member of the Saginaw County Board of Supervisors, from 1955 to 1957. Harvey was elected Mayor of Saginaw in 1957 and served for two years. He also served as a United States Representative from 1961 to 1974.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments[edit]

Eastern District of Michigan[edit]

Harvey was nominated by President Richard Nixon on December 5, 1973, to a seat vacated by Judge Ralph Freeman. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 13, 1973, and received commission on December 19, 1973, before later assuming senior status on March 31, 1984.[1] Harvey was succeeded in this position by Judge Richard Suhrheinrich.
