Three of the seven seats on the Manitowoc School District school board were up for general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbents Keith Shaw, Dave Longmeyer, and Dave Nickels all filed for re-election. They were joined on the ballot by challengers Elizabeth Williams, James Koldoff, and James Leist. Nickels, Shaw, and Williams defeated the other candidates to win seats on the school board.[1]

The Manitowoc School District is located in Manitowoc County in east-central Wisconsin. The county seat is Manitowoc. The county was home to 80,160 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] The district was the 31st-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 5,210 students.[4]

Manitowoc County residents underperformed Wisconsin as a whole in terms of higher education achievement and median household income. The United States Census Bureau found that in 2013 18.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years or older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.8 percent statewide. The median household income for Manitowoc County was $48,881 in 2013, compared to $52,413 for Wisconsin as a whole. The county poverty rate was 9.7 percent, compared to 13.0 percent statewide.[3]
