Jeremy D. Fogel was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He retired September 14, 2018, after serving for four years as a senior status judge.

Fogel also served as director of the Federal Judicial Center from 2011 to 2018.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Born in San Francisco, California, Fogel graduated from Stanford University with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and from Harvard Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1974.[1]

Professional career[edit]

Fogel entered private practice in California from 1974 to 1978. Fogel was also a lecturer in the Human Development Department of California State University from 1977-1978. From 1978 to 1981, Fogel was an attorney for the Mental Health Advocacy Project. He served as the organization's executive director from 1980-1981.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments[edit]

Fogel served as municipal court judge for the Santa Clara County Municipal Court from 1981 to 1986. He was a superior court judge for the Santa Clara County Superior Court from 1986 to 1998.[1]

Northern District of California[edit]

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, Fogel was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California by President Bill Clinton on September 8, 1997 to a seat vacated by Robert Aguilar. Fogel was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 16, 1998 on a Senate vote and received commission on March 17, 1998.[2] He assumed senior status December 31, 2014, and retired September 14, 2018.[1]
