Candidate Connection

Jessica McClure participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 17, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jessica McClure's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Affordable, Accessible Health Care

2) Education
3) Equal Rights For All[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

My daughter has eosinophilic esophagitis. She is forever labeled with a pre-existing condition, and I am fearful for her future. When our current Congressman voted to take away protections for Nebraskans like my daughter, and I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing. I decided to speak up, and run for office. I will fight for accessible, affordable health care because our lives depend on it.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jessica McClure answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Marie Curie because she was pioneering women in the sciences. She was involved in students' revolutionary organization prior to leaving Warsaw, was head of the physics laboratory at the Sorbonne, and gained her Doctor of Science degree in 1903. She was awarded half a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for her work with spontaneous radiation. In 1911, she received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work with radioactivity.[3]

I'm a lifelong learner, work hard to reach my goals, and am committed to implementing change.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve the people of Nebraska by advocating for economic solutions, health care access, education, and equality.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to think my ethical campaigning will be the start of system where it is not okay to attack opponents personally. That more women feel comfortable working on campaigns and running for office. That I am a tireless champion for equality.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Watching the towers fall on 9/11. To this day, I can remember the panic and horror I felt during my physics class, and it still makes me emotional. I was 19.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Locker room attendant at the local swimming pool at age 14. I had this job until I was old enough to work as a lifeguard.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What happened on your most awkward date?
Going to Star Trek IX movie when I'd never seen a single of the previous Star Trek movies. I had no idea what was happening.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas for sure! I love spending time with my family in Nebraska and watching the kids go wild opening gifts. The huge meals are the best.[3]

—Jessica McClure
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The intended purpose that it should be an office elected through direct democracy.[3]
—Jessica McClure
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
I started my career as a chemist, but moved out of the laboratory and started working with federal regulations. In the last few years I’ve worked with EPA, FDA, USDA, and Customs Compliance. Regulatory work was intriguing, so I decided to put myself through law school. I have work as a regulatory compliance specialist after law school.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Getting to a place where both Republicans and Democrats a can work together to create quality legislation that helps our country. Partisan politics seems to be getting uglier and uglier every year.[3]

Two year terms are great if the position holds true to the original intent. However, with long campaign cycles it seems like the House is always campaigning.[3]

What are your thoughts on term limits?
Term limits are good to limit oversaturation of politicians who have unlimited wealth to continue to be in office at the expense of the people.[3]
—Jessica McClure
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A fair average-median difference calculation, or other mathematical model based on population that discourages gerrymandering.[3]
—Jessica McClure

As long as I was able to obtain House experience first prior to the leadership position.[3]
—Jessica McClure
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Kamala Harris[3]
—Jessica McClure
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I've heard many stories, including ones that were so moving they just made me want to work harder and harder to represent Nebraskans. Stories about access to health care are so important because those who work hard still do not have treatment for cancer or surgeries they truly need and cannot afford. Recently, a story discussing what happens when OSHA safety requirements aren't met really hit home. To the individual I spoke with, your voice was heard and I'm absolutely committed to workplace safety.[3]
