Jesus Bernal is a judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He joined the court in 2012 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. At the time of nomination, Bernal was the Deputy Federal Public Defender in the Central District of California.[1][2]

Early life and education[edit]

Bernal attended Yale University, earning a B.A. in 1986. He went on to earn his J.D. in 1989 from Stanford Law School.[3]

On April 25, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Jesus Bernal to the United States District Court for the Central District of California to fill the vacancy left by Stephen Larson.[1] Obama commented on the two nominations, stating, “I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench. They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court.”[3]

Bernal was rated Majority Qualified; Minority Not Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 6, 2012 and you can find his [June 6, 2012 Committee Questionnaire available here] and his Questions for the Record available here.[4]

On December 11, 2012, the United States Senate confirmed Jesus Bernal to an Article III post for the United States District Court for the Central District of California with a voice vote.[5][6]
