John F. Walter is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.[1]

Education[edit]

Walter graduated from Loyola Marymount University with his bachelor's degree in 1966 and with his J.D. degree in 1969.[1]

Professional career[edit]

Walter became a private practice attorney licensed in the State of California from 1969 to 1970 and from 1972 to 2002. He worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office as assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California from 1970 to 1972.[1]

Walter was nominated by President George W. Bush on January 23, 2002, to a seat vacated by Judge John Davies. Walter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 2002, on an unopposed 99-0-1 vote and received commission on May 1, 2002.[2][1]

Judge Walter was the presiding judge in a lawsuit involving the music website BlueBeat.com. The judge on November 5, 2009, issued a restraining order on the music website preventing it from selling songs from the music group the Beatles. EMI, which holds the rights to the Beatles, alleged the website illegally sold Beatles songs.[3]

In March 2011, BlueBeat.com agreed to pay over $1 million to EMI in a settlement.[4]
