Julian Huerta was the Place 7 incumbent on the San Benito school board in Texas. He faced three challengers — Angel Mendez, Esteban Rodriguez and Gilbert Weaver — and lost re-election to Mendez on May 10, 2014. He was first elected to the board in May 2011.

After graduating from San Benito High School in 1996, Huerta attended Texas State Technical College. At the time of his tenure, he was serving on the district's Finance and Building Committee. He is married with three children.[1]

San Benito Consolidated Independent School District is located in Cameron County, Texas. The county seat of Cameron County is Brownsville. The county's population was 406,220 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[3]

Cameron County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 14.9 percent of Cameron County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Cameron County had a median income of $32,558 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Cameron County was 34.9 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[3]
