Kansas City, Kansas residents may see sales tax vote in November

KANSAS CITY, Kansas: Residents may see a sales tax initiative take place on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Kansas City, Kansas. The Unified Board of Commissioners of Wyandotte County met on August 6, 2009 to put together the wording of a ballot initiative that would fill holes in the recently adopted $250 million budget.

The proposed ballot measure must be approved by the city commission no later than September 29, 2009 if it is to make it to the November ballot. The commission will hold forums with business leaders and labor unions in order to see which holes in the budget need to be filled the most.

If enacted, the measure would implement a 1/4 cent or a 3/8 cent increase in the area’s sales tax. Most of the current sales tax goes directly to the state.^[1]
