History[edit]

The 2012 elections saw a stark shift from a moderate Republican-controlled chamber to a more conservative one. Although National Public Radio referred to the state as "not just red, it's a stoplight. It's molten lava. Republicans hold every congressional seat, all the big statewide offices and both chambers of the legislature," it also went on to note how greatly divided the party within the state was. The Wall Street Journal traced Kansas' shift further right to the 2010 election of Gov. Sam Brownback and many Tea Party-backed Republicans to the state legislature. More moderate Republicans sided with the legislature's Democrats in opposing a package of legislation including a tax cut for individuals and on nonwage income for businesses. "[B]ecause of the alliance in the state senate between Democrats and some Republicans that join together to promote a Democrat agenda, the primary election has effectively become the general," Brownback said, adding a partisan hue to the Republican primaries. In the end, nineteen incumbent Republicans were defeated in both chambers of the legislature.[2][3]
