A total of 1,377 seats were up for election in 440 of America's largest school districts by enrollment in 2015. These districts collectively educated a total of 10,322,036 students during the 2012-2013 school year, which was 20.54 percent of all K-12 students in the United States.^[1]

Candidates in these elections had an average of 88.45 days between the regular candidate filing deadline and the general election date, but that period varied widely from state to state and even within states. The longest spaces between filing deadlines and elections approached eight months, while the shortest were less than three weeks.

New York elections on May 19, 2015, had the shortest time period between filings and elections at 20 days. Pennsylvania provided the longest period between candidate filings and election dates at 238 days. All Pennsylvania candidates were subject to a primary election on May 19, 2015, 70 days after the filing deadline for partisan candidates. California's periods between filing deadlines and election dates ranged from 68 to 88 days.

The table can be sorted by each of its columns in alphabetical, chronological or numerical order by clicking on the column title, such as "District" or "Seats up for election."

Note: Ballotpedia has extended its coverage of Wisconsin school districts due to a grant. In addition to covering the 12 Wisconsin districts in the top 1,000 districts by enrollment in the United States, Ballotpedia also covers the additional eight districts that make up the top 20 districts by enrollment in Wisconsin. These eight districts are not included in the cumulative statistics on this page.

Write-in candidates[edit]

• Of the 32 states where these elections were held, 27 allowed write-in candidates to file for the races.
• The following 11 states did not require write-in candidates to file any particular paperwork to run as write-ins, though they may have been required to file campaign finance reports or other paperwork to have their votes counted or to take office if they won:
  • Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin
• The following four states did not allow any write-in candidates:
  • Delaware, Louisiana, Oklahoma and South Dakota

Unique cases[edit]

• In Connecticut, candidate filings were done through a combination of major and minor party endorsements, primaries and write-in candidates. The regular filing deadline in the table below, July 28, 2015, was the end of the major political parties' candidate endorsement period. Petitions to hold primaries for the major parties could have been filed until August 12, 2015, and minor parties could have endorsed candidates until September 2, 2015.
• Both Wisconsin and California allowed candidate filing periods to be extended if no incumbents filed by the regular candidate filing deadline.
