Maryland sees change in laws governing initiative process

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland: The state of Maryland saw changes in the laws governing the initiative process this legislative session as lawmakers passed a bill that would require ballot issue committees to file campaign finance reports the fourth Friday before an election. The bill was signed into law by Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malley on May 4, 2010. The bill was introduce by to the Assembly on January 28, 2010 and assigned to the House Ways and Means Committee.^[1]

However, this wasn't the only action the Assembly attempted to change the laws governing the initiative process in the state. Another bill, SB240, was introduced that proposed that signatures on petitions must match the name indicated on the statewide voter registration list. That bill was subsequently defeated.
