PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: Federal Prosecutor Luis Matos was sworn in as a new judge for the Rhode Island Superior Court late last month after being nominated by Governor Lincoln Chafee.[1]
“ | “Luis Matos is eminently qualified, with decades of valuable legal experience and awards and accolades from every position he has held. His story is a compelling one: emigrating from Portugal to Providence at a young age, Lu was the first member of his family to graduate from college. But even more impressive is what he has accomplished, most notably with the U.S. Attorney’s office, where he led a number of successful prosecutions in high-profile cases. He has earned an outstanding reputation in Rhode Island’s legal community, and has been described as a man of high character and integrity. Lu is a highly qualified candidate for an important position on the Superior Court bench.”[2] - Governor Lincoln Chafee [3] | ” |
Matos' background
Matos earned a bachelor's degree from Brown University and earned a J.D. from the University of Connecticut.
Before taking on the judgeship Matos was an assistant U.S. attorney in Rhode Island. He served in that position from 2001. Before that he spent time working in the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. and as an assistant U.S. attorney in Delaware.[1][2]
