Ohio House of Representatives
Elections for the office of Ohio's House of Representatives were held in Ohio on November 2, 2010.

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in these elections was February 18, 2010 (May 3 for independents). The primary Election Day was May 4, 2010.

In Ohio, representatives serve two-year terms with a limit of four consecutive terms. Representatives assume office on the first day of January following their election.

Term limits[edit]

The Ohio House of Representatives has been a term-limited state house in Ohio voters approved Ballot Issue 4, an initiated constitutional amendment, in 1992. This amendment became part of Section 2 of Article II of the Ohio Constitution and limits the amount of time that an Ohio State Representative can stay in office to four 2-year terms, saying, "No person shall hold the office of State Representative for a period longer than four successive terms of two years. Terms shall be considered successive unless separated by a period of four or more years."

13 incumbents (13.1% of all incumbents) are term limited in 2010. In addition to the 13 Ohio state representatives who are leaving office because of term limits, 7 Ohio state senators are also termed-out. Of the 13 term limited incumbents, 9 are Democrats and 4 are Republicans. These incumbents are as follows:

Qualifications[edit]

Article 2, Section 3 of the Ohio Constitution states: Senators and representatives shall have resided in their respective districts one year next preceding their election, unless they shall have been absent on the public business of the United States, or of this state.

Article 2, Section 5 of the Ohio Constitution states: No person hereafter convicted of an embezzlement of the public funds, shall hold any office in this state; nor shall any person, holding public money for disbursement, or otherwise, have a seat in the General Assembly, until he shall have accounted for, and paid such money into the treasury.

There are 78 incumbents seeking re-election. 8 incumbents (10.3% of those seeking re-election) faced no competition in the primary or general election.

Primary challenges[edit]

Only 12 incumbents (15.4% of those seeking re-election) faced competition in the July 27 primary. Of these 12 incumbents, 7 are Republicans and 4 are Democrats. 11 defeated their primary opponents while one, John Otterman (D) of District 45, fell to his primary opponent. Retiring incumbents[edit]

8 incumbent senators (8.1% of all incumbents) chose not to run for re-election, while 78 incumbents (78.8% of all incumbents) ran for re-election. Of the 8 incumbents who retired, 6 are Republicans and 2 are Democrats.
