    Phylis J. Speedlin was a judge on the Texas Fourth District Court of Appeals. She took office in April of 2003, following an appointment by Texas governor Rick Perry.[1][2] She retired from the court on December 31, 2012, following an unsuccessful bid for re-election.[3]

    Education[edit]

    Speedlin graduated from Incarnate Word College with a degree in nursing. She also holds a master's degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University and a law degree from St. Mary's University School of Law. Speedlin served for four years as a U.S. Army nurse.[4] She is now married and has two daughters and one son.[1]

    Career[edit]

    Justice Speedlin worked as a trial attorney with the law firm Clemens & Spencer for 17 years before she became a judge. During this time, she focused on the areas of medical malpractice and healthcare law. She then served on the 408th Judicial District Court in Bexar County for over 3 years and joined the Court of Appeals in 2003.[1]

    2012 election[edit]

    Speedlin was defeated by judicial candidate Rebeca Martinez in the general election on November 6, 2012. [5][6]

    Dear Birthmother[edit]

    While in law school, Speedlin co-authored "Dear Birthmother" with Kathleen Silber. The book has been described as an "open adoption classic" that is "gently provocative, warm and convincing." It includes copies of letters exchanged between adoptive parents and birthparents, and between birthparents and their children.[4]
