This table tracks the post-election partisan affiliation of all state legislators based on the most recent general election in each chamber relative to each even-year election.

The number of state legislators changed twice during this time period, decreasing from 7,424 to 7,382 after the 2000 elections and increasing by one to 7,383 in 2012.
