Out of all top state executive offices, only the governor and attorney general exist in all 50 states, and only the governor is elected in all 50 states. As the chief executive officer, the governor is among the most powerful figures in state government. Eleven states held elections for governor in 2020.
Of those 11 governor's offices, four were held by Democrats prior to the November 2020 elections and seven were held by Republicans. Montana Governor Steve Bullock (D) was the only governor unable to run for re-election in 2020 due to term limits.

Washington utilizes a top-two primary, in which a single primary election is held for each office wherein all candidates running for that office, regardless of party affiliation, compete in the same election. The two candidates receiving the most votes move on to the general election; all voters may vote in the primary for any candidate. Washington's primary was held on August 4, 2020.
