Scott Walker announces bid for presidency

After months of build-up, Scott Walker, the current second-term governor of Wisconsin, officially declared his candidacy for President of the United States with a tweet, saying: "I'm in. I'm running for president because Americans deserve a leader who will fight and win for them."[1]
The GOP primary field that Walker is entering into is one of the most crowded and competitive in recent history, but he joins the race with a considerable lead in several Iowa GOP caucus polls and strong showings in New Hampshire. A Quinnipiac poll conducted in late June gave him an eight point lead over his fellow Republican candidates in Iowa, while cumulative data from New Hampshire shows him trailing his closest competitor—Jeb Bush—by five points.[2][3] Walker was elected as the 45th governor of Wisconsin in 2010. He became the first governor in American history to survive a recall in 2012, and he won re-election in 2014. Before becoming governor, he was the Milwaukee County Executive from 2002 to 2010 and served four terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 2002. Walker will follow up his tweet with a speech in Waukesha, Wisconsin, later this afternoon.[4] He filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on July 2, 2015.[5] |
