Las Vegas, Nevada: Three candidates are competing for a justice of the peace position on the newly-created Las Vegas Justice Court Department 14. The June 8, 2010 primary will narrow it down to two candidates, who will compete in a final election on November 2, 2010.
Colby Beck has worked as a Chicago city prosecutor and a Las Vegas civil attorney. In defending his candidacy, he points to his experience in both civil and criminal law. "Having that experience helps on the bench," he said.
Conrad Hafen began as a civil lawyer, but has spent the majority of his career as a prosecutor--ten years with the Humboldt County district attorney's office and the past seven with the Nevada attorney general's office. He prides himself as being the only candidate who has successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and Nevada Supreme Court.
Bernie Zadrowski is a chief deputy district attorney. He runs the bad check unit, and says he has spent almost an entire 13 years in justice court. He points to this experience in defending his qualifications for the position and said, "The best way to train to be a judge in justice court is to practice every day in justice court."[1]
