Three seats on the Worthington School Board were up for election on November 5, 2013. Incumbents Jennifer Hitt Best, Marc Schare and newcomer Sam Shim defeated incumbent David Bressman to win the three at-large seats.

Worthington Schools in Worthington is located in Franklin County, which is situated in northern Ohio. The county's population was 1,163,414 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[1]
Demographics[edit]
In terms of graduation rate and average household income, Franklin County overperformed in these areas. The graduation rate was 89.3% compared to 87.8% statewide. The average household income was $50,045 compared to $48,071 in the entire state. Franklin County underperformed in terms of poverty rate with 17.4%, while the poverty rate for Ohio was 14.8%.[2]

Method of board member selection[edit]
The Worthington School Board is composed of five members that are elected at large. There was no primary election on September 10, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Three seats on the board were up for election in 2013 and two seats will be on the ballot on November 3, 2015.
Candidates for the Worthington School Board must be 18 years old, a resident of the district and not hold Schools office concurrent to board service.[3]

Endorsements[edit]
Jennifer Hitt Best and Marc Schare announced to the Worthington Education Association that they would not seek or accept endorsements from local teachers unions, believing it to be a conflict of interest.[4]
Shim was endorsed by the Worthington Education Association and the Franklin County Democratic Party.[5][6]
Bressman was endorsed by the Worthington Education Association, the Columbus Post and the Worthington Alliance for African-American Parents and Educators. He was also endorsed by current and former NFL Players Jay Richardson, Dimitrious Stanley and Antonio Smith.[7]
Campaign finance[edit]
Sam Shim received a total of $750 during the election, according to the Ohio Secretary of State. Neither Jennifer Hitt Best, David Bressman nor Marc Schare filed financial reports for their respective campaigns.[8]
What was at stake?[edit]
Four candidates vied for three at-large seats on the Worthington School Board on November 5, 2013. Two of the three incumbents won re-election, while David Bressman was replaced by newcomer Sam Shim.
