An Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) is a U.S. government lawyer, often a nonpolitical employee of the U.S. Department of Justice, who supports an appointed United States Attorney. The AUSAs commonly do the actual courtroom work; there will be a substantial number of AUSAs in a busy judicial district such as the Southern District of New York. The role may also be a steppingstone either to appointed office or to elected politics. |
