Cape Cod is an L-shaped peninsula of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It constitutes Barnstable County, which is divided into towns, which in turn are divided into villages. It runs east-west from the mainland, and then turns north. The area is a major tourism and commercial fishing destination.
The Cape joins Plymouth County at the Bourne Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal
In common usage, the Cape is divided into three sections, plus a number of offshore islands. Nearest to the mainland is the Inner Cape.
The Outer Cape begins where the peninsula turns north.
