The Chicago White Sox are a Major League Baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The team was founded in 1901 as one of the inaugural teams in the American League. Known as the White Stockings at first, they quickly changed it to the White Sox after local media started shortening it for the purposes of writing headlines. ^{[1] [2]}

Championships[edit]

The team has had a total of 3 championship-winning seasons in the modern era (1901 and later) of major-league baseball, winning the World Series in 1906, 1917, and 2005. They were also American League champions, but lost in the World Series, 2 times, in 1919 and 1959. Prior to the start of the modern World Series in 1903, the team won the American League title in 1901, the league's first year. ^{[3] [4]}

Locations and Nicknames[edit]

The team has been based in Chicago since its inception in 1901. They have played their home games at the following stadiums. ^[5]

• 1901 - June 27, 1910: 39th Street Grounds
• July 1, 1910 - 1990: (Old) Comiskey Park (Originally named White Sox Park, but soon became known as Comiskey Park)
• 1991-present: Guaranteed Rate Field (Originally named New Comiskey Park, renamed U.S. Cellular Field in 2003, renamed Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016)

They have been known by two different nicknames. Originally known as the White Stockings, the Chicago Tribune immediately started shortening this to "White Sox." In 1904, the team officially adopted the shorter name. ^[6]
